Alum leads reconciliation in action In just two years, Matthew Schaeffer went from political science student to Fort Lewis College’s first reconciliation coordinator. His path was sparked by a 2023 History Colorado report on Indian boarding schools that stirred difficult emotions for the 24-year-old Hopi tribal member. “I just felt really compelled to do something,” said Schaeffer, whose family attended boarding schools. As president of FLC’s Political Engagement Project, his research revealed gaps in understanding the college’s reconciliation framework. That work led to his current role, funded through generous donations and grants, supporting reconciliation in FLC’s 2025–30 Strategic Plan. Now, Schaeffer leads efforts like the Belonging Colorado program and draws from personal experience, including learning to introduce himself in Hopi. “Everyone should be able to experience that feeling,” he said. “And it’s something boarding schools tried to take away.”
