Alumni Awards spotlight advocates and changemakers Each fall, Fort Lewis College honors alumni who embody the heart of FLC—shaped by learning, transformed through service, and committed to uplifting their communities. These five award recipients represent the best of Fort Lewis College and remind us that investing in students yields far-reaching returns—in boardrooms, courtrooms, classrooms, and beyond. Rising Star Award: Jennifer Yazzie (Psychology, '16) A Ph.D. candidate researching historical trauma's effects on Native college students, Yazzie mentors students and leads workshops supporting Indigenous identity while advancing the field of Indigenous mental health. Service to FLC Award: Thad Trujillo (Business Administration, ‘95) From star quarterback to FLC Foundation Board Director, Trujillo has secured critical real estate gifts, supported athletics, and brought business expertise to strengthen FLC's financial future and inspire student-athletes. Alumni Achievement Award: Dave Markham (Business Administration, '85) After a distinguished Lockheed Martin Space career, Markham chairs the Business Advisory Council and helped launch the FLC Center for Innovation, supporting students, entrepreneurs, and pandemic-era resilience with bold leadership. Faculty & Staff Service Award: Michael Valdez, professor of management Recognized for outstanding service to alumni, Valdez co-directs the expanded Hawk Tank Business Plan Competition, engaging alumni, high school, and San Juan College students. His leadership helps launch ventures and showcases entrepreneurship as a pathway for every student. Community Leadership Award: Matthew Campbell (Sociology & Human Services, '04) As deputy director of the Native American Rights Fund, Campbell champions Tribal Nations at the highest levels, co-founding coalitions and passing legislation protecting Indigenous sovereignty and Native student expression.
