FLC celebrates prestigious Carnegie recognition Fort Lewis College has earned a prestigious new designation in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications: "Research Colleges and Universities." This honor recognizes institutions investing at least $2.5 million annually in research and development. With $3.37 million in research expenditures reported in 2023 and a 39% growth in its research portfolio over 18 months, FLC is emerging as a national leader in undergraduate research. This achievement is powered by sponsored grants and philanthropy. Philanthropic endowed funds are transforming the student experience at FLC—turning curiosity into discovery and ambition into impact. The Chemistry REMEMBERS Endowment, established by Paul Bernatis, Ph.D., honors faculty mentors and directly supports undergraduate research in chemistry. The Art & Design Excellence Endowment, created by the Schnitzer-Novack Foundation and Ashley French (Business Administration, '06), expands access to advanced studio work and visual arts research. The General Ron and Miss Jane Fogelman History Excellence Endowment fuels interdisciplinary history research projects connecting students to cultural and environmental heritage. "The gifts and grants that result in faculty and student research at FLC are deeply connected to hands-on learning and community engagement," said Provost Mario Martinez. These funds are more than financial support—they are catalysts for inquiry, innovation, and opportunity. FLC also earned a "Special Focus: Arts and Sciences" classification, placing it among just 6% of colleges and universities nationwide, and a "Higher Access, Medium Earnings" designation, affirming its commitment to affordability and strong post-graduation outcomes. Together, these recognitions celebrate the power of sponsored grants and donor investment to advance research, elevate student success, and shape a brighter future.
