Solar training program empowers regional workforce The timing couldn’t be better. As the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe prepares to launch a 4,000-acre Sun Bear Solar Project, which is expected to create 500 local jobs, Fort Lewis College is stepping up to ensure the Four Corners has skilled workers ready to meet the moment. Last fall, FLC launched its Photovoltaic Training pilot program, a strategic investment in individual opportunity and regional economic development. The program offers community members the chance to gain expertise in solar energy installation and design, preparing them for careers in one of the nation’s fastest-growing industries. The program includes two asynchronous courses offered through FLC@Work. Designed for flexibility, they prepare students for the NABCEP PV Associates Credential, a nationally recognized certification. “Fort Lewis College is proud to be a leader in workforce development, particularly in industries critical to our region’s future,” said Provost Mario Martinez. “This program empowers individuals while addressing the need for trained professionals in the renewable energy sector.” Laurie Williams, Ph. D., an engineering professor with extensive photovoltaic experience, leads the instruction, ensuring students receive industry-relevant training. Participants can attend tuition-free, thanks to scholarships funded through the Durango Industrial Development Endowment—established by a gift from the Durango Industrial Development Foundation. “By investing in this program, we’re not only helping individuals achieve career success, but also building a stronger, more sustainable community,” said Melissa Mount, vice president of Advancement and CEO of the FLC Foundation. This pilot is the first phase of FLC’s broader vision for solar workforce development. A virtual solar lab, currently under construction at the Education & Business Hall, will offer expanded training. As renewable energy continues to grow across Colorado and the Southwest, FLC’s solar initiative positions the region for long-term prosperity while ensuring local talent leads the way.
