Fort Lewis College has been designated as a “Special Focus: Arts and Sciences” institution in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications, a recognition that underscores the College’s unique academic mission and focused approach to undergraduate education. This classification places FLC among a select group of only 6% of colleges and universities nationwide. In addition, Fort Lewis College received a “Higher Access, Medium Earnings” classification in the newly developed Student Access and Earnings Classification, which highlights institutions that are expanding access to higher education while generating solid post-graduation outcomes for students. The 2025 Carnegie Classifications, administered by the American Council on Education (ACE), represent a significant update to the longstanding framework used to categorize and compare U.S. institutions of higher education. Using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) for the academic years 2020–2023, the revised Institutional Classification reflects the breadth and depth of programs offered and the size of the student body, among other criteria. “This recognition speaks to both the strength of our academic programs and our commitment to creating pathways for opportunities for every student,” said Interim President Steve Schwartz. “We’re proud to be recognized for our efforts.” Fort Lewis College’s placement in the “Higher Access, Medium Earnings” category of the Student Access and Earnings Classification acknowledges the College’s dedication to equity and affordability, while also emphasizing the value of an FLC degree in the labor market. Both classifications reflect the College as it existed during a defined snapshot in time and are based solely on publicly available data. This cycle did not incorporate updates and changes made at institutions after the 2022–23 academic year.
